MONITORING WILDLIFE AND DETECTING THREATS IN REAL TIME

wpsWatch is our core mobile and desktop app solution for fighting wildlife crime in real time. Using a suite of custom camera traps, sensors, and software, we’ve developed a system capable of providing 24/7 monitoring for any given conservation area or wildlife reserve in the world. When wpsWatch detects wildlife threats, it sends emails or SMS alerts to security and monitoring staff, prompting an immediate response to active intrusions and illegal activities.

wpsWatch has detected hundreds of potential poachers and is an effective tool for the protection of endangered species and ecosystems.

INTRUSIONS AT A GLANCE

Poachers in South Africa

SOUTH AFRICA

On August 29th, 2018, our wpsWatch system recorded this poacher equipped with a long rifle and silencer in the middle of the night on a reserve in South Africa. One of our dedicated volunteers spotted the image and immediately brought it to our attention.

OUTCOME:

Reserve managers and WPS responded right away, sending the photo and its GPS coordinates to anti-poaching units on the ground, who proceeded to pursue and apprehend the poacher, fortunately before any rhinos were killed.

“One more rhino is saved and alive! You guys were great. Thank you, WPS.” —Coenie Erasmus, Warden, Free State Parks, South Africa

Poacher in Malaysia

MALAYSIA

In mid-December 2018, wpsWatch cameras identified an image of a man carrying a gun who had illegally entered a protected area in the Sabah region of Malaysian Borneo. The poacher trespassed by car and was continuing on foot into the forest when staff saw the photo.

OUTCOME:

Malaysian management dispatched a patrol team to assess the situation. Rangers found the vehicle and captured and apprehended the man.

wpsWATCH INTEGRATIONS

wpsWatch can integrate a number of different camera deployments, including wpsCameraTraps, current or existing camera traps, closed-circuit surveillance cameras, and short to long-range wifi cameras to create a holistic view of any given conservation area.  With each of these camera options, our software transfers photos as they are captured via nearby GSM and/or wifi networks, filters them through our threat assessment, or to other tools, and into the hands that need it most.
