We are thrilled to announce that WPS has been admitted as a member of IUCN, the world’s largest global environmental network of like-minded organizations working together to address today’s challenges.
Created in 1948, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) works in more than 170 countries for a just world that values and conserves nature. With over 1,300 member organizations, including governments and NGOs, and more than 11,000 volunteer scientists and experts, IUCN gathers the latest knowledge on biodiversity, assesses the status of species, and protects the natural world. And, with the World Conservation Congress held every four years, IUCN is Nature’s voice on the international stage. Some of you might remember that a team of WPS staff and volunteers attended the 2016 IUCN Congress in Hawaii.
There were an estimated 10,000 visitors at the Exhibition over the ten-day Congress, and the WPS booth was constantly full with NGOs from all over the world interested in wpsWatch and our educational apps. In fact, a couple of our WPS project managers are in Maui right now installing camera systems to monitor some of the last remaining Newcomb’s Tree snails in existence at the Puʻu Kukui Watershed Preserve, an organization we met at last year’s Congress.
