Devin Jaffe from Nature’s Educators explains that Swainson’s hawks are a large bird species named after William Swainson, a British naturalist. They are nicknamed “grasshopper hawk” or “locust hawk”, as they are very fond of eating locusts and grasshoppers in flight that may be kicked up by farmers and their tractors. Swainson’s hawks have the largest migration path of any North American raptor, ranging from North America in the spring and summer to winters in Argentina.
